EkaSol 1 - The Environmentally Friendly Alternative to MEK | The Green Solvents Show #002

March 25, 2014

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is a cost-effective, highly effective solvent, but has high potential toxic side effects on human health and the environment.

There are new alternatives available; ones which have a smaller environmental impact while achieving great results.

If you’re looking for environmentally friendly solvents for the workplace; you’ll want to invest 20 minutes to listen to The Green Solvents Show podcast. Host Erik Reynolds interviews Dave Pasin, president of TBF Environmental about environmentally friendly solvent EkaSol 1.

This podcast indicates how to make a shift away from Methyl Ethyl Ketone and its hazardous properties.

Previous Options for Change

As Dave explains in the podcast, there had been very little choice when it came to replacing MEK. Previous attempts had limited success. Some of the samples were not VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) exempt or had the wrong freezing / boiling points, solvency issues or their polarity was incompatible.

The Demands on the Alternative

The demands on an alternative to MEK are extremely high; any replacement has to match MEK closely. Only a slight deviation from performance requirements might cause serious problems in their use with resins. These issues could include the material not mixing smoothly or the resin not drying correctly.

When Dave began to research an alternative to MEK, he had to ensure there was nothing in the ingredients which could be harmful to the environment. It had to be benzene free and non-carcinogenic.

Dave said it took two years for the alternative to be delivered, but when it was, it surpassed all expectations.

The Uses for the Alternative

There are many uses for this new alternative to MEK.

  • surface preparation
  • precision cleaning
  • heavy or general de-greasing
  • breaking contact cleaner
  • fiberglass manufacturing
  • paint line or paint gun cleaning

If you use MEK in any of these applications, learning about this product could be beneficial for you.

EkaSol 1 is also VOC-exempt across the US, except in the South Coast Air Quality Management District. In Canada, only 30% of the weight of EkaSol 1 must be reported.
