The Gospel and Baltimore
In this week’s podcast, I am NOT attempting to address the specifics of the recent incidents in Baltimore. What we are discussing is really more about the way that we, as Christians are responding or should be responding to difficult issues in our world. We want to see incidents like the events in Baltimore as opportunities to let the Gospel be seen for what it really is: the answer to the question. When Jesus announced His Gospel, He did it in a world that knew about social upheaval, unrest and even riots. In Jesus’ day, people were crucified for starting riots and certainly race and prejudice played important roles. Some sneered at Jesus saying, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” (John 1:46). Others raised eyebrows when they were told that Jesus was coming from Galilee, which was known for producing revolutionaries. Jesus’ Gospel was not announced in a safe, cozy, atmosphere like an American Sunday-morning Church service. Jesus’ Gospel was announced in the midst of people who were ready to take up arms and slice of the ears of their opponents! (Matthew 26:51). My prayer is that we will learn how to preach the gospel at all times and in all places, but especially where the tensions are high. Somehow, I believe that the Gospel will go forward in the places of tension a lot faster than in the places of comfort. Pray with me as I pray about how to promote the Gospel in Baltimore, Ferguson, Detroit, and everywhere where the world is hurting. Jesus is still the bringer of good news!
