What is PCOS? | DRS 177

In this episode of The Dr. Rob Show we continue our discussion of female hormone issues and talk about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also know as PCOS.

There are many factors that can contribute to PCOS, but elevated insulin levels are at the core of PCOS.  Overtime, this results into insulin resistance, which can create a variety of symptoms listed below.

Symptoms of PCOS: 

There is a wide vareity of symptoms associated with PCOS.  Below is a list of some of the more common issues women tend to experience.

Infertility
Amenorrhea (no period)
Hair loss
Hair growth (face)
Carb cravings (sweet or savory)
Weight gain / Weight flucuations
Fatigue
Insomnia (feel wired and tired)
Anxiety
Depression
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar symptoms)

Lab Testing for PCOS: 

With PCOS, there can be an elevation to DHEA and Testosterone.  Also, it is also useful to assess the thyroid as well.  Below is a list of blood tests that could be done for woman suffering with PCOS.

Blood Tests:

Lipid panel (triglycerides)
Insulin, fasting
LH
DHEA-S
Testosterone
TSH
Free T3
Free T4

Metformin
