Why would such an evil comprehensive failure of a system, such as Marxism, appeal to so many people?
They're mostly losers on some level. Those who can win within a meritocracy don't want to change it (unless they're lying celebrities protecting their cash).Those who can't compete, of course want to change the system to advantage them over those who can. The problem is, this destroys society and makes us all poor and without freedom.
