BFM 016: Taking action, are you not doing it?

October 29, 2014

Are you known for taking action?
One of the questions I like asking my students is, on a scale of 1 to 1o what would you rate yourself as being an action taker? And when I ask, I always get an answer that is justified.

So when I ask that question, it gets people thinking... When are the times that I took some serious action?

They don't look at the times when they weren't taking action, it's all about the times when they did.

The usual number is 8.
Hang on for a moment! what about the times you promised yourself that you were going to setup your webinar and work got in the way?
What about the times when you said that you were going to do that podcast episode but you put it off for 2 months?
The truth is that we as humans don't like to be known as a non action taker.

We always justify the good things we have done and you know what? me too! I am the first to admit it. Taking action is something we always say that we do and don't like to be known as something we put off.

Many times when we run seminars we see the same people turning up from the last time we ran the seminar. And it's great to see that they are coming again because we all know it's great to refresh the brain.
Yes a refresher is great but did you end up putting some of the things you learnt from the seminar in place, in other words, did you end up taking action?
Hmm... My friends that turn up to seminars say to me, I still haven't done anything from the last time I came here.

Why?
2 reasons I can think of are:
- Accountable
- Comfortable
We all know that they want do be taking action but why would they?
The reality is, they don't need to!

They are making ok money and getting by in their job which means they are comfortable.

Their boss is already holding them accountable for what they are doing in their job.

When they come home from work, the husband or wife holds them accountable for what they didn't get done around the house.

The pay check is coming in every week, they don't have to think hard in order to make money, all they have to do is turn up.

Let's face it, it's easier than running a business.

They will only do something when there is a need.

Bull crap Ray!

When I was single (I mean not married) I needed to feel significant, which meant that I wanted to look great, you know... 6pack abs going to the gym doing a workout, looking my absolute best and that was my main focus so that when I go to the beach people would recognise me and that would make me feel good.

What a douchebag right? Well now that I look back, I would agree.

But there was a strong need and desire for me to be looking like a gym instructor and the pain around not looking and feeling great was overwhelming. That pushed me over and beyond what I could normally accomplish and boom the douchebag was born.

Taking action wasn't an option for me, it had to be done.
So how can you apply a similar strategy around business?
How can you create a strong desire for your accomplishments?
First thing you have to do is turn the comfort in your job and workplace into un-comfort.

How do we do that?

We are all driven be 2 things in life.
- Pain
- Pleasure

In this podcast, I talk about these 2 points and give you an exercise which you can start applying today that will help you overcome comfort and get you taking action.
Warmly,
Ray Kanoon
