Bird of the Month: Dark Eyed Junco

February 01, 2013

The Dark-Eyed Junco is a dapper medium-sized sparrow with a round head, short beak, and a fairly long, conspicuous tail. Known popularly as “snowbirdsâ€, Dark-Eyes Juncos appear in Northeast Ohio at the beginning of winter and move back up to colder Canada every spring.

Dark-Eyed Juncos are birds of the ground. They stay low in forests, scratching through leaf litter and flitting through underbrush. At feeders, they’ll be the ones underneath, scavenging the seed dropped by your other visitors.  They prefer millet to sunflower seed, making our seed of the month Buffet a perfect choice for them.

Dark-Eyed Juncos form fairly large flocks in winter, and where seasonal ranges overlap you may see noticeably varied subspecies at your feeder. They also play well with others, and are regularly seen foraging alongside other sparrows and bluebirds.
