Anya, Masha and Yammies – How to Find Home in this Place

June 21, 2023

Braemar welcomes students from all over the world to our school in downtown Toronto. We regularly emphasize the diversity of our students’ backgrounds as an incitement towards mutual engagement and learning. Multiculturalism is at the centre of our school’s and our community’s ethos for good reason: when we encounter new identities in an equitable space, we grow in ways that were previously impossible, and we introduce the potential for a more supportive and vibrant world.

In the course of their educations, many of our students come to embody this value, and become ambassadors of empathy and engagement in their respective spheres. Three such students joined us on our podcast this week.

Anya, Masha and Yammies are some of the most experienced students at Braemar. Each has experienced enormous growth during their time here, moving from wide-eyed newcomers to confident leaders whose attitudes and actions invigorate our school culture.

Their progress sheds light on the popular theory of “Cultural Adaptation” and gives a much clearer idea of what the prescribed stages of that framework look like in our lived experiences. We’re thrilled to be able to share their energy and perspectives with you in this final episode of BLSA: Season 1!
