Aircraft Spar Cutter by the Navy’s Fleet Readiness Centers

September 15, 2017

An engineer at the Navy’s Fleet Readiness Centers in California has developed a patented precision cutting tool for airframe mechanics tasked with repairing hard to access, and irregularly shaped spars.
The cutting tool is adaptable to spars of differing material, shape, and size. Two areas are cut with the tool and tapped with a rubber mallet so the spar snaps out leaving only a small bit of flash for minimal filing.
The device has potential for sales to both civilian and military customers and the Navy seeks a business partner to license the patented design for commercialization.
