Tech In Boston

David Cancel [Tech In Boston #50]

August 19, 2015

David Cancel is the CEO of Driftt.

In January 2015, David and his co-founder Elias Torres raised $15M from CRV, General Catalyst Partners, NextView Ventures, Founder Collective and HubSpot founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.

You’ve heard the fundraising story before, but here’s where this one is different: Cancel raised that money without even pulling together a pitch deck for investors. People wanted to back whatever they built next after leaving HubSpot - the place where they were working since HubSpot bought their last company Performable back in 2011.

While at HubSpot, Cancel re-built the product organization and helped point the company in the direction that led to their IPO in the fall of 2014. He’s also been the founder of Compete, Lookery and Ghostery, all of which he built here in Boston, and all of which had successful exits.

David and I talk about:

*What he's up to at Driftt
*His experience re-building the HubSpot product team
*Why he hates Waterfall and Agile development methodologies
*How he builds product teams (the secret is very small, autonomous teams)
*The most important thing he's learned about hiring
*Why he doesn't keep to-do lists
*His advice for non-technical founders
*What’s great about building a company here in Boston
