Is one of Jackie Stiles’ scoring records about to get broken?

Didn’t you think that all — or most — of Jackie Stiles‘ NCAA scoring records set while playing for Missouri State were safe?

Well, if Baylor’s Odyssey Sims continues to win and score, she could put Stiles’ single-season scoring record in jeopardy. Coming into the NCAA Tournament, Sims needed 124 points to pass Stiles’ 1,062 points from the 2000-01 season. Stiles, now an assistant coach at Missouri State, is still the only women’s player to score more than 1,000 points in a season.

In Sunday’s first-round victory in the NCAA Tournament over Western Kentucky, Sims scored 31 points to lift her to 969. It ties for for third with Cal State Fullerton’s Genia Miller (1991). If Sims and Baylor reach the NCAA Tournament game, she will have 5 more games to break the record. That’s only an 18.6 points per game scoring clip. In 4 games, that’s 23.3; in 3 games, that’s 32. This season, Sims is averaging 28.5 points per game, which is second in the country.

Most points scored in a single season

1. Jackie Stiles, Missouri State, 2001 — 1,0622. Cindy Brown, Long Beach State, 1987 – 9743. (tie) Genia Miller, Cal State Fullerton, 1991 — 9693. (tie) Odyssey Sims, Baylor, 2014 — 9695. Sheryl Swoopes, Texas Tech, 1993 — 955

Baylor’s Odyssey Sims

• To reach the record in 3 games (Regional Final), Sims must score 32.0 points per game

• To reach the record in 4 games (Final Four), Sims must score 23.3 points per game

• To reach the record in 5 games (championship), Sims must score 18.6 points per game

Stiles still has a vice grip on the career scoring record with 3,393, especially since Baylor’s Brittney Griner graduated
