Description:
Dr. Aiyer, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction. He is Chief of the Foot and Ankle Service and is an assistant professor at the University of Miami Mill School of Medicine’s Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Aiyer completed his undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from UC Berkley, went to Drexel University College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Aiyer further specialized in Foot and Ankle Reconstruction and is an active mentor, blogger, and researcher looking at the prevention of arthritis. Along with Dr. Varacallo and Dr. Kaplan, Dr. Aiyer founded OrthoMentor, a medical student mentorship platform and podcast designed to help students get into residency.
In this conversation we dive deep discussing the tragic loss of his mother and how it shaped his path to medicine, why he chose orthopaedic surgery, why he thinks mentorship is one of the most important parts of our medical training, and how he uses self-reflection to learn from the negative experiences in his life. This is one of those conversations I know I will be re-listening too in the coming weeks.
