About Adam benShea

Adam BenShea is a Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Ricardo “Franjinha†Miller. Adam has won gold medals in the California State, Pan American, and World Championships. He has trained martial artists and fighters for competition in Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, and Mixed Martial Art shows. At present, Adam teaches at Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Santa Barbara and lectures at the college level in religious studies and political science. A graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara, Adam received his MA from Indiana University and is a PhD candidate at Emory University.


Adam has authored a number of articles related to teaching and training for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, and grappling. His writing has been featured on T-Nation, EliteFTS, Texas MMA and a host of physical training Web sites. Along with his best friend and business partner, Josh Bryant, Adam also co-authored the Amazon bestseller, “Jailhouse Strong”.

Can you share one of your habits that contribute to your success in the gym? Drinking lots of water


What are your favourite exercises? Bodyweight circuits, grappling dummy drills, and BJJ drilling

What is currently on your workout music playlist? I do Pandora, so it changes


How do you psych up for a workout or set? Focus on my breath.


What was one exercise or routine that gave you great gains in muscle mass and/or strength? Back in the day, lots of bench (close grip, chains, etc.). These days, pull up pyramids


What’s your favourite way to speed up recovery between workouts? Jump in the ocean


What’s your favourite meal? Burrito


What’s your favourite cheat meal and how often do you indulge? Beer. A couple of times a week.


What supplements do you feel work well for you? Omegas


What do you do to relax? Read, bodysurf, or paddle
