About Mike Gillette

As a kid, Mike Gillette was usually one of the smallest and weakest kids in his class who grew up in a household overwhelmed by domestic violence and substance abuse. Mike realized early on that he’d never be big, but he always dreamed of becoming strong. And at the age of 19, Mike began to find his strength… at church.

In the years that followed, Mike built a life story that sounds like an action-adventure novel. A life which includes time spent as an Army Paratrooper, SWAT Commander, Member of the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame, Counter-Terrorism Consultant to the Department of Homeland Security, Bodyguard to Fortune 500 executives and film stars like Sylvester Stallone and a record-setting strongman who has been featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not and Guinness World Records.

In the strength realm, Mike wrote the ‘Savage Strength’ program, sold in over 20 countries worldwide, he is the author of the book ‘Rings of Power’, to be published by Dragon Door this fall and he is about to unveil his Psychology of Strength certification this fall in cooperation with criticalbench.com.

Bonus Q&A

Every person that we interview on The Super Strength Show has an opportunity to answer some extra questions that aren’t asked in the podcast. It’s a chance for our listeners to learn a little bit more about our guests and to get even more value from our show. Check out Mike Gillette’s answers below!

Can you share one of your habits that contribute to your success in the gym? I don’t stop. I have faced catastrophic injury and never stopped. I do not stop in the presence of aches and pains, boredom, fatigue or distraction. And because I never stop, I’m very hard to stop.

What are your favourite exercises? In my 20s and 30s I had favorite exercises. For me, having “favorites” led to chronic overuse injuries. Now I don’t train exercises, I train movements; (pulling, pressing, hinging, squatting). My favorite exercises are any exercises which don’t hurt.

What are your favourite muscle groups to train? Neck strength, grip strength and body toughening/hardening.

What are your favourite pieces of equipment? Rings, land-mine and grip gadgets.

What is currently on your workout music playlist? Norma Jean, The Chariot, Family Force Five, Thousand Foot Crutch

How do you psych up for a workout or set? By remembering those times in my life when I was weak. This gets me where I need to be mentally in a hurry.

What was one exercise or routine that gave you great gains in muscle mass and/or strength? Weighted ring-dips

What’s your favourite way to speed up recovery between workouts? I don’t focus on recovery per se, if I feel like I need more time between workouts, I’ll take it. Most of the time I don’t. I’ve built my training around how I seem to respond best, so my recovery issues tend to have more to due with modulating the wear & tear of training as opposed to the more holistic view of recovery.

What’s your favourite meal? Rib-eye steak, medium well, with grilled onions and a little blue cheese.

What’s your favourite cheat meal and how often do you indulge? Pizza. Maybe once or twice a month.

What supplements do you feel work well for you? CoQ 10, Fish Oil, KreAlkalyn Creatine, Mag Powersorb (magnesium)

What do you do to relax? Listen to all kinds of music, read books about strength and strong people, enjoy my family. (Married 30+ years, four children, four grandchildren).
