Advice for Ben

The notes below are a combination of advice and ideas.

Dan

  • There is a huge need and market for this service
  • Content, particularly podcasting is for the long term
  • WP Curve actively refers people out for site migration
  • High stakes and one off is risky – recurring could be regular referral from partners
  • Good one off pricing means great options for affiliates
  • Create a landing page that taps into fears and provides options for people interested in content (not ready to buy right now) and people ready to buy right now (buy now button)
  • Video looks cheap ditch it and your copy doesn’t tap into fears
  • Fill it with social proof and remove any anti social proof
  • Having 1 partner tells me you aren’t a serious business you are better off having none
  • Site is slow – it’s a big priority to eat your own dog food, so make sure it’s fast
  • Do 5 free projects (ideally some for influencers), do an amazing job and grab powerful testimonials

Content Ideas

  • A lot of opportunities available – tap into fears around moving websites and create an extremely comprehensive site migration guide
  • Focus on deep fears, for example – sites going down, emails missing or losing business
  • Get input from influencers, put a small summary post together with a specific call to action to download the full guide
  • Put readers on a sequence as well as your mailing list
  • Consider a way of creating ongoing content so people stay on your list and think of you when they are finally ready to move their site

Product offering

  • Responsiveness - Can you get a text message for urgent emails or if sites go down? Can you offer 24/7 coverage?
  • Partnerships - look to build a steady stream of partnerships with web designers, hosting companies or service providers like us
  • Affiliates - Well suited to affiliates. A lot of companies would be happy to refer this work for a $50 one off payment. We would, if we knew you would do a good job
  • Influencers - Start from day 1 working on influencer partnerships
  • Consider specializing specifically in WordPress

Alex

Questions

  • Who are your competitors and what do they charge?
  • Are there any value adds that you can make recurring?
  • How many migrations have you done and can this business be scaled?

Observations and feedback

  • Your site was slow as a wet week when I took a look at it
  • ‘Downtime is not an option’ is great, the blah blah section – not so great
  • Be more specific about plans and hosts to limit your risk
  • We don’t do this work for a reason…
  • Shorten your sign up flow – it’s ridiculously long,  get a small commitment first
  • The signup flow is way too technical, for example: What access level do you have at your current host?* What OS runs in your environment?* What type of server(s) are we migrating from?* Make this easy for me – I want to move from  GoDaddy to WPEngine
  • Use name, email, phone number and offer a free web migration consultation
  • When you offer a flat rate service, you don’t need to frontload this information
  • Your site is WAY TOO SLOW! It took at least 20 seconds to get to payment page…
  • Don’t chase agencies!
