Godliness – Sat – 23-04-29

April 29, 2023

Several years ago I entered the church auditorium one Sunday morning and received a small envelope about the size of a business card. Everyone who entered received one. We were told not to open them until prompted to do so during the sermon. The speaker talked about the priorities of life and how priorities often change when people have a terminal illness. He challenged us to examine our priorities if we knew we would only live the amount of time on the card in the envelope. I opened mine and it said “one year.” Some people’s cards read “one day,” others “one week” and some “one month.” His point was this: we all will die, we just don’t know when. So, change your priorities now. The card really made me think.

This is a similar point to the one made in 2 Peter 3:10-12, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.” (NIV 1984)

Don’t waste any more time chasing after things that will burn at the Lord’s return. Pursue godliness today.
