Aging With Art

December 29, 2014

Amy Henderson has a mission: To showcase the value of older Americans. As she struggled through a difficult time in her life, she noticed that many of the older people in her life felt invisible and discarded. Yet, they had such wisdom and value to offer. She decided to focus on those aging with art.

She returned to school and created her own learning environment to prepare her to fulfill her mission. During her course work, she launched her non profit organization The Geezer Gallery. The Gallery showcases master-level artists and events where the income goes to provide assistance and classes for older citizens.

Her purpose is to start the conversation about agism and growing old in this country. Part of the mission of her Geezer Gallery is to demonstrate the brilliance of the older members of our community. On the other hand, she offers workshops that teach the older artists how they can earn more money from their art work to sustain themselves in a way that gives them dignity.

Amy's passion is working with older artists as they bring their body of work to new venues. Besides display in her Geezer Gallery, she also facilitates placement and purchasing of their art work into new buildings, hospitals and into other public spaces.
