The Changing Definition of Work

December 10, 2014

Amy Schulz is the head “Ambassador of Opportunity†at New World of Work. By collaborating with entrepreneurs and employers both locally and across the nation, this groundbreaking organization based at Feather River College (a community college in Northeastern California) has identified the top 10 skills necessary for success in the 21st century.

Amy makes the case the people in the workforce today are seeing that there is no ‘life-time’ careers. As jobs are outsourced, individuals need to know how to navigate the opportunities that may not be found in the traditional corporate situation.

She notes that today at least 34% of the workforce today are working for themselves on their own. Projections show that by 2020 that number will exceed 50%. Amy believes that entrepreneurial education is the core of future workforce development, and she is committed to creating an even playing field for the disenfranchised.

To that end, she led a research effort to understand the ‘soft’ skills people need to survive work in the 21st Century. Her latest project is spreading the word about the New World of Work, and preparing our students for the gig economy they are entering.
