SluffCast Episode 18: A Million Teraflops

June 16, 2016

E3 happens every year in Sunny CA and this year we have a website that offers us a platform to offer our opinions about the show and the announcements made. We understand however that a lot of our listeners aren’t avid gamers and most of our core audience appreciate that we explain things in a way that Jim can understand.
So here is our E3 episode, for gamers and non-gamers alike.
This week Bill, Chris Dumoulin, and Kris Price discuss these 3 topics: E3 for Non-Gamers – The Tech of E3 – Other Big Announcements/ What excites us?
E3 for Non-Gamers (3:37)
What stories/games can appeal to non-gamers?

Minecraft Friendly Update – Mojang and Microsoft showcased cross-device multiplayer between iOS, Android, Samsung Gear VR and Windows 10 devices, made possible with Monday’s launch of the “Friendly Update” for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta and Minecraft: Pocket Edition with XBL achievements across all platforms. With Xbox Live and the Minecraft Realms service, Windows 10 and mobile Minecraft players can host their own multiplayer worlds on private, cloud-based servers and play with friends 24/7, even when the original world creator is offline. Available now!

Xbox Play Anywhere – A big point of emphasis this year was sure to be the further conjoining of Xbox and Windows 10. We already knew that they wanted to make their games cross-buy but Microsoft went ahead and labeled the initiative calling it Xbox Play Anywhere. Announced alongside Gears of War 4, this feature allows players to buy a game once and own it on Xbox and Windows 10. It will allow for full multiplayer and co-op experiences and will let players save on one platform and pick up seamlessly on the other. The current list of games available for the service are Gears of War 4, Killer Instinct: Seasons 1, 2, and 3, Forza Horizon 3, Recore, Cuphead, Slime Rancher, The Culling, Everspace, ARK: Survival Evolved, Sea of Thieves, Scalebound, State of Decay 2, and Halo Wars 2. Phil Spencer has said that he wants this to be offered for every digital release on the platform but no timetable for that was given at the conference. Needless to say, this is pretty awesome and will allow you to pick up and take your games anywhere you have a Windows 10 device.
Dumoulin – We Happy Few – Once you stop taking your mandatory hallucinogenic drug called Joy, you realize that the world is not at all like the people believe. (Xbox, Windows)

K – South Park: The Fractured But Whole – If you love South Park, you’ll love being immersed into the world where anything you do is reacted to realistically by the characters from the show. Pre-orders will get you The Stick of Truth as well. (PS4, Xbox, Steam) (Warning: mature content)

Bill – Spider-Man – The early games on PS2 were great. This should easily get comic book but non-gamer fans interested.

4 Player Co-Ops

Sea of Thieves – Pirates (Xbox, Windows)
State of Decay 2 – Zombies (Xbox, Windows)
Ghost Recon: Wildlands – Drug Cartels (PS4, Xbox, Windows)
Star Trek Bridge Crew – Space (Major VR platforms) – While the startup cost is a bit much, Star Trek fans will be able to pilot the Enterprise with other players.
