Induced abortion laws have come a long way. In fact, until 2013, Iowa allowed telemedicine abortions, where women could tele-conference with a physician and click a button to unlock the drawer containing mifepristone, the first of two pills used to perform medically-induced abortions.

WHAT ARE THE STATISTICS?

Globally, there are about 44 million induced abortions each year, but this is not a new phenomenon. They have been performed since ancient times by use of herbal medicines, sharpened tools, physical trauma, and other traditional methods. Today, unsafe abortions are a major cause of injury and death among women worldwide with approximately 20 million unsafe abortions are performed annually; 97% taking place in developing countries.
