EP 37 Plato's Cave

January 30, 2015

I would like to present here a modern version of Plato's cave. If you're familiar with the story or allegory of Plato's cave, it's a story of prisoners being locked up in chains and forced to look at a wall for their entire life. On his wall are shadows of objects that are being passed behind them in front of a fire. As the objects are passed behind them the people passing the objects behind them, make the sounds that the objects might make. For example they might pass an image of a monkey in front of the fire so that it projects onto the wall, and then make the sound a monkey would make. This is the only thing these prisoners have ever known in their entire lives, and they believe it to be reality. Without going any further on Plato story I would like to give you the modern version that I have created and hopefully it will help you to understand how we come to our beliefs and what the possibilities are.
