News Espresso: Envoy 'followed president's order' on Giuliani, Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria, Hong Kong schools reopen as last campus protesters hold out

November 20, 2019

U.S. ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland says he "followed the president's orders" to work with Rudy Giuliani on Ukraine. Sondland is a key witness in the House impeachment inquiry into President Trump. During testimony today, he said he and his colleagues didn't want to involve the president's personal attorney in diplomacy efforts with Ukraine, but they were told to by the president. The Israeli military says it's carried out a "wide-scale" strike on Iranian targets in Syria following a rocket attack on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The military says fighter jets struck dozens of targets, including weapons warehouses and military bases. Fatalities've been reported. Hong Kong schools have reopened after a six-day shutdown but students were facing transit disruptions as the last protesters remained holed up on a university campus. City officials tried to restore a sense of normalcy as primary and secondary schools reopened Wednesday.
