Welcome to another edition of Ringside Politics with Jeff Crouere

Today’s Hot Topics:

1)  Despite pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to help overturn his election loss, Vice President Mike Pence will stick to his ceremonial duties and not block Wednesday’s certification by Congress of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, advisers said.

Trump ramped up pressure on Pence on Tuesday to block congressional certification of the November election results in an ongoing attempt to stay in power, after dozens of lawsuits by his campaign challenging the outcome failed in U.S. courts.

The vice president, a loyal lieutenant during the four years of Trump’s often chaotic presidency, has no plans to intervene and has told Trump he does not have the power to do so, even as he seeks to show support for the Republican president’s quest.

2) A significant share of Republicans plan to object to Electoral College vote results, slowing down the inevitable that Joe Biden will be next president.

They include Republican Reps. Mo Brooks of Alabama, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Louie Gohmert of Texas, who were among the first wave of members of Congress to say they would object to the results. Dozens more have joined the ranks.

Other House members expected to object Wednesday include Ohio's Jim Jordan, New York's Elise Stefanik, Georgia's Jody Hice and South Carolina's Joe Wilson. Several freshman Republicans have also said they will join in the plans.

Notably, top House GOP members have remained mum on the plan publicly, though Brooks claims he has the support of the chamber's minority leader, Kevin McCarthy.

3) The leader of the Proud Boys, arrested Monday by D.C. police, has been ordered out of the city as a condition of his release from jail, ABC7's Sam Ford reports.

The order bans Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, 36, from entering the District of Columbia, with very limited exceptions to meet with his attorney or appear in court.

Tarrio was arrested by Metropolitan Police Department officers after he arrived in Washington ahead of protests planned by supporters of President Donald Trump to coincide with the congressional vote expected Wednesday to affirm Joe Biden’s election victory.

Tarrio was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest for destruction of property, police said. He is accused of burning a Black Lives Matter banner that was torn down from a historic Black church downtown last month.

4) Democrat representative Emanuel Cleaver has defended the prayer he gave on the first day of the new Congress that ended “amen and a woman” as lighthearted.

Mr Cleaver sparked a conservative backlash when he delivered the gender neutral prayer to open Congress on Sunday.

The lawmaker from Missouri, who is also an ordained United Methodist priest, says he tweaked the traditional prayer ending to recognize the record number of women serving in the 117th Congress.

Republicans hit out at the prayer and pointed out that “amen” does not refer to gender but means “so be it” in Hebrew.
