Read Poetry and Eventually Die

Ep. 1 – Dean Atta

September 25, 2014

for my first episode, i talk about the poetry of dean atta !! dean atta is a london-based poet whose subject matter includes love, race, sexuality, life in a world with social media, mothers and fathers, using grindr in italy, and revolution.

in the opening of the show, i talk about my goals with this podcast as a whole, and why i'm doing it! i discuss how poetry is often poorly presented in schools, how i learned to appreciate more aspects of what poetry can do, and my love for reading poems aloud.

at 9:15 i start talking about dean's poetry! i play a recording of the book's title poem, then discuss themes and patterns in the book, reading more excerpts and full poems aloud myself.

you can follow dean atta on twitter here, and learn more about his book here.

content warning: this episode contains a racial slur repeated multiple times in a reading by the author, from 10:40 to 12:50. also i use the f-word a few times later in the show.

discussion topic: what do u feel about rhyming poetry in general? what are some examples of rhyming poetry u love?

thank you for listening !!
