Francine Shapiro Ph.D. is an American psychologist and educator who originated and developed EMDR (An abbreviation for 'Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing'), a form of psychotherapy for resolving the symptoms of traumatic and other disturbing life experiences. She is a recipient of the International Sigmund Freud Award for distinguished contribution to psychotherapy presented by the City of Vienna in conjunction with the World Council, the American Psychological Association Trauma Division Award for Outstanding Contributions to Practice in Trauma Psychology, and the Distinguished Scientific Achievement in Psychology Award presented by the California Psychological Association. Her latest book is "Getting Past Your Past".

According to the latest from World Health Organization:

World Health Organization (in press). Guidelines for the management of conditions that are specifically related to stress. Geneva, WHO.
"Trauma-focused CBT and EMDR therapy are recommended for children, adolescents and adults with PTSD. “Like CBT with a trauma focus, EMDR therapy aims to reduce subjective distress and strengthen adaptive cognitions related to the traumatic event. Unlike CBT with a trauma focus, EMDR does not involve (a) detailed descriptions of the event, (b) direct challenging of beliefs, (c) extended exposure, or (d) homework.”
EMDR therapy research indicates you can eliminate PTSD from single trauma within three sessions. EMDR therapy can be done on consecutive days since it doesn’t need homework. That means field teams can successfully treat victims of natural and manmade disasters on site within days. It’s very different from CBT which is the only other empirically based trauma treatment. In addition, more than 20 randomized studies have reported positive effects of the eye movement component used in EMDR, including immediate reduction of emotional distress.

Given the extensive research on the importance of adverse life experiences as a basis of pathology, there are a wide range of EMDR therapy applications for both mental and physical problems.

[BUY THE BOOK] Getting Past Your Past: Taking Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy

Both the webinar and the book "Getting Past Your Past" explain the importance of “unprocessed memories” as the basis for a wide range of problems. This provides a new definition of the “unconscious.”

EMDR therapy procedures are used to identify the source of problems and address them directly through processing.

We can also do a lot through EMDR self-help techniques. For instance, we often get caught up in disturbing emotions or thoughts. But knowing where they come from can help us remember to do something so we don’t stay stuck.

The book contains techniques to help readers identify the memories that are causing the negative reactions, and other techniques that will allow them to change the negative thoughts, emotions and body reactions. Additional techniques to excel and achieve peak performance.
