Ep 28: Watchmen’s Tulsa Massacre in Historical Context

October 27, 2019

HBO’s Watchmen premiered on Sunday. If you’re not familiar, it is a series that is set decades after the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name that ran as 12 issue maxi series from 1986. The setting was an alternate U.S. in 1985 centered around a costumed crime fighter murder mystery. The series was groundbreaking and genre changing with political commentary and adult themes. In 1998 it won the Hugo Award, that annually highlights the best in science fiction.

Many fans either didn’t know about the massacre and many felt the plot was too political. I’m not going to address the other elements of the show but wanted to discuss the Tulsa Massacre and other events concerning white supremacist violence that were widespread events in American History that we may not be aware of.
