X-Wing Starfighter: The Backbone of the Rebellion – TS#10

September 15, 2016

The Empire had no idea that it would only take one shot to destroy their entire massive weapon known as the Death Star. But, that's exactly what happened. And, that fateful shot came at the hands of Luke Skywalker. But, what craft was he piloting? Why, the ship that was the identifying weapon for the Rebellion: The X-Wing Straighter. It truly was the "backbone of the Rebellion" as they battled their way to victory over the Empire. Basic Facts

The T-65B X-Wing
The X-Wing, as it came to be known, was actually a T-65B. Its "class" was a straighter and its "line" was an x-wing straighter. It was known for its iconic wing-like strike foils or "S-foils" that were mounted on opposite sides on the rear of the craft. Normally, they would be placed against the other, but in battle would be spread to give it the "X" shape from the front or back. It had room for one pilot in the cockpit as well as one astromech co-piot. A classic example of this was Luke Skywalker flying with R2-D2. From this location, the pilot could manage the targeting system as well as all weaponry. Designed for BattleThe X-Wing was fashioned to be used in battle situations. It had quick speed and great maneuverability. It could also make the jump to light speed with its hyperdrive. It was equipped with shields that could be moved around the craft by the pilot. This made it do well in dog fights against the TIE Fighter which had no shields.

X-Wings during the Battle of Yavin
Another important feature of the X-Wing was its weapons system. It had four laser canons placed at the end of each wing. It also included 2 proton torpedoes on the underside of the craft. Along with its four engines, this provided a great way to swoop in, make a great shot and get back out. A Galactic Legacy

As mentioned, the X-Wing is the backbone of the Rebellion. It was used in a variety of locations and events throughout its history. For example, Luke Skywalker piloted an X-Wing in the destruction of the first Death Star. Also, it was an X-Wing that Yoda lifted from the waters on Degobah to teach Luke that the Force is a "powerful ally." And, Wedge Antilles piloted an X-Wing during the Battle of Endor to help destroy the second coming of the Death Star. The Fight Continues

The T-70 X-Wing
Even though the X-Wing is most noted for its time int eh Rebel Alliance, it still has a strong place years later. When the Resistance, led by Princess Leia, swooped in to rescue Han Solo and crew in "The Force Awakens", they were led by a new model of X-Wing, known as the T-70. It was an upgrade to the former T-65B, with improved weaponry, better armor and more fluid systems. Use the Force, Luke on Disney Video
