The Definition of a Padawan – TS#4

August 05, 2016

When I began this journey, I wrestled with what to call my podcast. I wanted something that made sense, was easy to remember, connected to the idea of the show and made a decent URL. So, after much thought and research, I settled on "Project Padawan." It makes perfect sense for what I am doing. However, some folks might not know what a padawan is or why it matters to the show. Therefore, I thought I would take this training session and explain the meaning behind the word padawan.Basic Facts

Padawan is a word used for a young person who is "force sensitive." When this talent is recognized, they begin training and are called a "youngling." They begin this training very early. (In fact, Yoda stated that both Anakin and Luke Skywalker were "too old" to start their training.) Once they have completed the first part of this training, they move on to become an apprentice with a Jedi. This is where they become known as a "padawan learner" and the Jedi becomes their Master. They train with this specific Jedi for a period of time. They travel with them and learn the ways of the force, practice their lightsaber skills and become mature in many areas. At the end of this, they go through he "Jedi Trials" and if passed, becomes a Jedi Knight. The Padawan Braid

A padawan was identified by the braid that they wore from the back of their head. It was formed from hair or synthetic materials for those species who didn't grow hair. They they completed their Jedi Trials and became a Knight, the braid was cut off with their lightsaber.
