If you are just starting your journey into Star Wars Fandom, this may not be a topic that is even on your radar. However, it is important to the conversations we will have. When it comes to Star Wars, there is one main thread running through it all. From movies and tv shows to books and comics, there should be continuity throughout. But, what is included in this? Or, better said, what is Canon? Let's take a look at that...Basic FactsFirst of all, let's define the word canon. The dictionary says that canon is a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works. Back in the 70's, George Lucas started a revolution with the movie "Star Wars" (now referred to as "A New Hope"). This sparked imagination in people. Thus, they began to write, draw, conceive and create a vast universe based onto characters and places found in Star Wars.All of these stories, characters, planets, vehicles and such became known as the "Extended Universe." They were highly entertaining and gave fans exactly what they wanted: more Star Wars.Attack of the Disney​Over the years, Lucasfilm created a variety of content for fans to enjoy, namely the 6 movies and tv show "The Lone Wars." They also licensed a wide array of content for the EU. However, in 2012, Lucasfilm was bought by the Disney Corporation. This brought many changes, but in April 2014, one of the biggest came to fruition. Canon vs Legends

Disney made a galaxy shattering announcement about Star Wars and all that would be included in Canon. Basically, they said that the canonical story now began with Episode I: The Phantom Menace and proceeded from there. It would include all 6 movies, the tv series "The Clone Wars" and "Rebels" and any future productions, novels, comics, games and so forth.

Therefore, everything else not deemed Canon by Disney would now be lumped into one category called "Legends." That's right...the EU basically became an old ghost story that your weird uncle would tell you at summer camp.
