Passport to Parenting- The Family Meeting

March 26, 2013

Families are where we learn our most fundamental values. Learn how family meetings and creating a family mission statement can help your family align around those values.

Here is one trick to make your family meeting better, start with a quote or a short story. We suggest one that teaches a value or a moral.

This is an example of a story Ann likes to use to start her family’s meetings:

“There is a story passed down from an old Cherokee chief. He told his grandson there is a battle going on inside all of us between two wolves.

‘One if evil- it is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, self pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, superiority and ego.

He continued, ‘The other is good – it is peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, joy, benevolence, empathy, generosity,  truth, compassion, and faith.’

The grandson thought about it for a minute and asked, ‘Which wolf will wins?’

The old chief simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’”
