Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD – Chief Medical Examiner, Washington DC

February 20, 2019

Roger Mitchell, Jr, MD, Chief Medical Examiner, Washington DC, was recruited to head up the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner after it lost its accreditation. He successfully completed this mission in 3 years and has led his team to international recognition. Mitchell received his medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. His background is in forensics and he worked for the FBI after graduating from Howard University. Mitchell’s grandfather, Dr. H. Donald Marshall, was friends with Dr. Charles Drew, who was an expert in transfusion medicine and organized America’s first large-scale blood bank. Mitchell tells Andy about how, when in Atlantic City, Dr. Drew would stay with his grandfather due in part to Jim Crow laws at that time. One thing is evident from this interview, Dr. Mitchell is committed to his office and community. He and Andy talk about gun violence, the opioid crisis, and the lack of reading and writing among the younger generation, and how these affect Our Town. But Dr. Mitchell is a stable force in Our Town. His ultimate mission is service to community, something he learned from his grandfather. In addition to serving as Chief Medical Examiner, he is becoming a minister to be able to “promote hope in a way that frees people so that we can make the best choices in this city.” Enjoy this uplifting interview!
