In this episode, your host Nick Jaworski interviews Dr. Norm Ickert, Director of Ickert Dental Implant Centre. In this edition they talk about the dental implant surgery process.

Dr Ickert explains that most dental implant surgery procedures can be treated at your local dentistry office. As they are treated within the community, dental implant surgeries are considered outpatient procedures. The surgery only requires local anaesthetic, similar to other procedures like fillings, crown and root canals.

However, Dr Ickert states, that some patients prefer to be sedated for their surgery. This can be administered by IV or orally. This is very safe and is a great option for those who suffer from anxiety and can totally calm apprehension. In some cases it has been known to wipe the patient’s memory of the procedure.

Most patients who have dental implant surgery suffer from little discomfort. The same can be said for those patients who have bone or gum grafting.

Dr Ickert is very cautious about stating statistics into the success rate of dental implant surgery. He notes there are numerous articles that can provide any result you want. However, he does say that a straightforward case has a high chance of success. In fact, Dr Ickert, goes on to state that dental implant surgery has a higher chance of success than many other procedures.

This does assume the patient is generally healthy, does not smoke and has no uncontrolled health conditions, like diabetes. Patients that have controlled diabetes don’t have the same risks associated with their treatment as those that are suffering from uncontrolled health conditions.

One of the biggest risk factor, as Dr Ickert explains, is smoking. Those who smoke can prevent their wounds from healing because smoking limits the amount of oxygen that the wound receives.

Another high risk factor is gum disease. If there is significant gum loss around the teeth, then there is a higher chance of complications with the implants. However, it is not impossible as long as the area of treatment is super clean and, in some cases, a course of antibiotics is taken prior to the treatment.

One of the biggest complications from dental surgery is the inflammation to the area around the implant. There have been new developments in this area of dental care that should help to reduce the risk and options for treatment.

Dr Ickert also states that technology has improved so much in the past 20-30 years. Previously, there use to be problems associated with implants, especially the screw component. Now with the latest developments, there are few incidences of screws loosening or breaking.
