Elaine Lindsay shares her favorite mindset book

Laura: Elaine, what I’ve noticed over time and especially in the process of coaching thousands of online entrepreneurs is that all too often, they’ve got business skills, but not necessarily the right mindset to be successful. So I’m curious. What is a favorite mindset book that you recommend and why is it that you recommend it?

Elaine: OK, this is going to be hard to limit to just one because I’m a voracious reader, but I’m going to have to go with Maxwell Maltz Psycho-Cybernetics. Now my aunt gave me this book in 1974, I think, and something... She was very inquisitive and really wanted to know everything, and she was always looking into new types of self discovery, and back in the ‘70s, there weren’t quite as many as there are now, but it’s... I want to say along the lines of Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, but I’ve actually put it on the audio book as well, because I tend to play these tapes at night, and it really takes you through, you know, self image and getting that right mindset for you and making sure that you deal with all the extraneous verbiage so that you can maintain that mindset.

Laura: Yeah, for anybody who has not heard of this book, I believe it was first published, if memory serves, in 1960. That tells you how far back it goes.

Elaine: Yeah.

Laura: And it is... You’re so right like it is along the lines of thinking we’re rich, but what I really like about Psycho-Cybernetics is the fact that it’s deeper. It’s more... I don’t want to say scientific because I don’t want it to sound like it’s heavy reading, but I think... I’m so thrilled that you brought this book up because I think what it really does and nobody did for me is that it helped me to understand sort of the science of how my brain works because usually, in my career, if I look back over my life, usually, when I have had a stumbling block or when I have dealt with a hurdle, the biggest part of that hurdle was actually me. It was my own mindset. It was something that I put in my own way.

And you know, when I really started to understand the mechanics of my personality, then I was able to overcome that and see success in a whole new way. And in large part, it was because of Psycho-Cybernetics being able to understand the scientific makeup of how I operate because I operate differently than you do. You operate differently than Andrew and Keith and Heather and the other OMS mentors, but Psycho-Cybernetics helps you understand your individual persona.

Elaine: It does and it takes it like even further than that in, you know, a how-to-turn your crisis into a game, for instance, and you know, how do we get and keep your focus when you understand what it is that motivates you because we’re not all motivated by the same thing.

Laura: And it’s important to know what it is that motivates you. Like you just said, if you don’t know what your individual triggers are for motivation, then you can get no rut that can be very, very difficult to get out of, but when you know what those triggers are, now it makes it so much easier to be able to get out of those holes and continue to go on an upward trail.

Elaine: Absolutely, absolutely, and that’s where you build on those habits. You know, when you set... When you have your mindset and you have your daily habits in place that keep you in that focused track, it just all comes together and mashes really well to give you that. For me, I find it uplifting.
