Elaine Lindsay talks about her own way on growing her list and expand her presence

Laura: Elaine, taking social media out of the equation, which I know is hard to do, but let’s go there for a minute, what is another avenue that you use and that you would actually recommend for people who want to grow their list and expand their presence?

Elaine: OK, this is actually a good one because I’m going to take this offline, OK. Depending on the niche you’re in, there are so many different types of trade shows and festivals and collaborative events and conventions that you can rent a booth or what-have-you that’s going to give you a perform forum to add to your list, you know.

It’s quite often something that people don’t think about enough, OK. When you get together with a group, say at a trade show, there’s old people that compliment your skills, and you’re doing a live event where a lot of the participants are in not necessarily your niche but close enough that the people that are coming through, the audience, is actually your audience.

So those are really good places to grow the list, expand your presence, and also, even offline, build that social proof that is now a part of the equation in search.

Laura: So very true. You know, and when you think about what that can mean, when you are participating in a trade show, there’s such a larger audience there than you ever could have cultivated on your own.

Elaine: Yeah.

Laura: Yeah, I mean, you know, depending on the type of trade show that you’re participating in, there can be thousands and thousands and thousands of people coming through the door.

So understanding that, understanding the potential that that has to grow your list, having a great offer that is actually an online offer, you know, having something that says like thanks for stopping by. Please be sure to visit such and such website to download your free guide to blah, blah, blah, having something that is going to be powerful enough that people will take the action to go online and download it so that they get on your list is such a great way.

I’m so glad to hear you bring that up because it’s not something most people think about, and there are so many trade shows. Trade shows happen every day. I don’t think people even realize how many of them did place.

Elaine: You’re absolutely correct. And the thing is, OK, it is that targeted audience because it’s not like, you know, when you go to trade shows, it’s in sort of one… one sort of larger area, but it’s not like, you know, you go to a trade show and it’s electricians and life coaches. Like it is much more focused than that. A lot of the trade shows in the conventions and even for that matter, collaborating with two or three others that are in a complimentary field to do a one-day, a VIP day is also another great way.

Laura: Yes. So many wonderful things can come out of that. You know, I think that the one thing… If I think about the number of people that I know that I’ve coached that I’ve suggested something similar and why they don’t do it, it’s usually because it’s outside of their comfort zone.

So if it’s something… If you’re listening to this podcast right now and you feel like that is something that might be outside of your comfort zone, find somebody else to do it with. Find somebody else in your area that has done it before, and ask them if you can go along with them. Help them man their booth. Contribute something for them to give away so that you can grow your list at the same time, but oftentimes, you can remove that fear factor by going through those motions the first time with somebody else. You’ll be shocked at how it builds your confidence, and then you can unleash the power to build your list by leveraging that as a technique.

Elaine: That’s a really good point, Laura. And it’s often that’s part of that collaboration. It’s often easier for them too if they only have to shoulder half the work when you go to someone else.
