68: Applying for a job that you don’t meet the qualifications with Nicole Clarke

August 11, 2016

Welcome to the show guys I am so happy to have you here today’s guest is Nicole Clarke and she’s going to be talking about applying for a job that you technically not as qualified she should be. It is an interesting story hope you enjoy the show
Nicole is a 26-year-old lady. She told me that she works as a patent agent in a law firm to help their clients get patents on their inventions. She said her duty is to help them to write a patent application and then help them submit that to the United States patent office where they will hopefully get approved and get a patent for their pension
She also told me that she majored in biochemistry in college and really had no idea what she wanted to do so she took a job working in a lab after graduated and she just hated that action. She said there is not a ton of options for science degrees like that especially if you don’t have a Ph.D. or masters or something but this is one of the few things you can do and you obviously get to work with science a lot and she have to understands the inventions which for her are basically the thought of chemical and biochemistry inventions outside of drug.  After she finally understand the science she said that she also has to write a lot so that she can write their application and that made her a good mix off and that was just a good opportunity for her.
The question was how did she applying for a job she didn’t have all the requirements. She said probably have not met all of the requirements for the actual position but she was able to get them through just knowing how to apply for jobs even when she was not a hundred percent match for the job description. She said that she passed the patent bar exam and so she was ahead the baseline qualifications but she had no experience and she was hired but the reason she was hired is because she knew someone in the company and the person knew her very well as a hard worker, smart that she wasn’t just a random person. so she was able to refer her and that she got the job.
She narrated her experience on how she started the networking. She said she was able to achieve this through LinkedIn, also tried to reach out to everyone she knew and not just professional connections, she reached out to friends, former coaches and actually and one of her former high school teachers who introduced her to one attorney who worked with the law firm.
She didn’t just get the job just like that even when she didn’t have the correct experience but she was able to understand what skills the employer was looking for. so since she already developed herself in her writing skills and then she can look at her experiences and see if any of those experiences would require that skill and sets a good way to show her employer that she don’t actually have the experience you want but the experience that she does has helped her help her to secure the job.
She ended up advising people who are just starting in that if they don’t have exactly what the job description is calling for or don’t have any idea of the job description, it is better to stay away and just focus on networking continue to networking because you never know where someone you meet is to lead you and don’t just don’t give up too quickly
She told me how she has been connecting with the online that she had a blog and called audaciouslyso.com to help women when they don’t know where to start their career it helps them figure out what options are available to them and just helps them get going
