The Ministry of Jesus Christ, Mark 1:14-15

September 12, 2019

Looking out over the Evangelical churches today I'm concerned when I see that some of them tend to steer wide of clear gospel preaching in their churches. Instead of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ they preach practical tips and helpful advice to have a successful life.

If we look at the Gospels we quickly find out that Jesus ministry was not typified by preaching of self improvement but rather by the preaching of the Gospel.

Sermon notes
Mar 1:14-15

14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,

15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus preached (His ministry method)

To preach/proclaim/herald: κηρύσσω

Strongs: “to be a herald; to officiate as herald; to proclaim after the manner of a herald; always with a suggestion of formality, gravity, and an authority which must be listened to and obeyed;”
This word indicates more than simply communicating facts, the preacher communicates truth with a tone of urgency and an emphasis upon application. This does not refer to one on one dialog but rather to more formal and public address.
A very clear picture from the LXX that describes for us what this word means.

Pro 8:1-6 1 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: 4 “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. 5 O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. 6 Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right,
To preach is to publicly proclaim truth and call people to believe and take appropriate action that corresponds to the truth they heard.

The main method of ministry was preaching

He didn’t come to establish interfaith dialog
He didn’t come to do lifestyle evangelism
He didn’t come to build synagogues
He didn’t come to be a moral influence in society
He didn’t come to simply be an example
He didn’t come just to heal people
He came to preach!

His ministry was saturated with preaching

John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by preaching

Mar 1:4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Mar 1:7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

Jesus purpose was to preach

Mar 1:38-39 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.” 39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus himself summed up his ministry task as primarily preaching

He pointed to prophecy from Isaiah 61:1-2

Luk 4:18-21 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free, 19 and to announce the year of the Lord's favor." 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. While the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him, 21 he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled, as you've heard it read aloud."

Jesus sent out the 12 to preach

Mar 3:14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be wit...
