89°F The first full week of summer was hot and the coming week will be even hotter!

June 26, 2016

Hey Hey Giovanni here! Your Weatherguy. Here are this week’s Podcast shownotes.
Weather rewind:
– The first full week of summer was hot as we reached the low 90s in Nevada City.
– High pressure offshore and onshore cut off the onshore flow, warming us up late in the week.
– The week ended dry and hot with no surprises as no summer t’storms developed in this very dry weather pattern.
– It looks like we are done with rain. Ending the season at 50.58″ in Nevada City. 12″ below normal for the season, but fortunately the snow pack made up the difference.

Weekly Forecast:
-The coming week looks very dry and hot as High pressure remains in control.
-Expect daytime highs in the low to mid 90s in Grass Valley/Nevada City while Penn Valley gets super close to 100°F on Wednesday.
-The possibility of t’storms developing over the Sierra crest increases on Wednesday, carrying over into the Holiday weekend. With the bulk of the activity staying south of Hwy 80.
-Long range forecast models keep us dry for the next 7-10 days with some cooling late in the week as Low approaches the Pacific NW bringing back the onshore flow.
La Niña coming next winter?
In climate news the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has issued a bold statement about the strong possibility 75% of La Niña affecting the west coast next winter.
What does that mean for us?
This is not good as a La Niña winter means less rain and snow for California as the cooler waters offshore weakens the storm track to the south, meaning the jet stream will remain focused over the Pacific NW slamming British Columbia and Washington with tons of rain and snow. This is not a huge surprise and expected with the strong El Niño we just had. I’ll have more details as the CPC releases them, but for now prepare for a dry winter.

June – August Precipitation and Temperature Outlook: A Hot and dry summer is on the way!

It’s even warm in the Sierra as the heat wave blasts NorCal.

Current reservoir levels still look with the bulk of the snow already melted.

High pressure blocks everything for now, including the Delta breeze.

The jet stream will continue to steer to our north pumping in a dry and mild southwest flow into California.

Forecast models look dry for us as t’storm activity returns to the eastern Sierra midweek.
