54°F Buh-bye rain! We dry out and warm spring weather makes a comeback.

May 08, 2016

Hey Hey Giovanni here! Your weatherguy. Now that was not the typical spring weather week we had become accustom to. We had actual rain and Sierra snow that arguably was the most we’ve seen in recent years, especially along the Sierra crest where almost 2ft fell above 10,oooft. This is perfect. Although we are almost down to just half the snow pack we had back in March, what remains is deep (over 10ft in some places) and will take much of the coming summer to finally melt away. Well at least through August anyway. All this weather was due to a typical late season weather pattern and a displaced ridge of High pressure that by this time of the year will usually park itself off the Washington coast blocking all storminess keeping the jet stream flowing into the Pacific NW while we bask under a warm spring sun. Instead. This ridge of High pressure remained too far offshore and to SW almost teasing us with a return to a more winter like weather pattern. This was not to be as the storms that took advantage of this open door did not have the required dynamics or deep moisture tap to bring us more than light rain and valley t’storms that in all added up to a mere 0.56″ of rain.

Weekly Forecast: The coming week will signal the return to warmer dryer weather pattern as High pressure pushes the jet stream into the Pacific NW. Our days will slowly warm as the clouds push east bringing us closer to 80°F by Wednesday with just a few passing high clouds. We may see a few clouds returning to the Sierra by week’s end, but only cooler temperatures are expected with no rain in sight here in Nevada City/Grass Valley.
*Statewide Sierra snow pack is at around 57% of normal for this date!
