50°F Warm spring days gives way to a rainy weekend. We remain unsettled this coming week with more storminess!

April 10, 2016

Hey Hey Giovanni here! Your weatherguy. April is here and we are getting a little bit of everything this week as we hit 84°F this past Wednesday with gorgeous blue skies and ended the week wet and cloudy. The past couple of days have been way interesting as we have been sandwiched between two dynamic storm systems. The first is a cut off Low has been menacing Southern California for the last couple of days slowly drifting inland and is now over the desert southwest as it opens up, but not before bringing flash flooding to Las Vegas as this Low interacts with a trough dropping into the Great Basin rotating moisture into western Nevada and NorCal including some isolated t’storms rumbling through Plumas County near Chester to our north. Locally we have missed out on any wild and wicked weather as the trough has remained too far to our east to really bring us any t’storms. This doesn’t mean we won’t see any heavy rain, because we just might, but don’t count on it as this complex weather pattern will stay with us tonight before it lifts to our east on Monday.

Weekly Forecast: All this rain is melting our snow pack! Snow levels have remained above 8000ft with very little accumulation with this current stormy weather pattern. This coming week will start out unsettled as the jet stream will be slow in pushing Low pressure to our east. Tuesday will bring us warmer temps as the jet stream lifts to our north, but partly cloudy skies will remain with us. A colder wetter storm looks to arrive in our region by Wednesday night with much lower snow levels on Thursday. No. not that low, but snow down to 4500ft looks very possible with this late season storm. This will likely prompt chain controls over major passes with heavy rain in western Nevada County. The weekend looks dry! Long range forecast models are starting to fall apart as the flip flopping I’m seeing is hurting my eyes. This is a typical response to the coming dry spring weather pattern expected later this month. We will likely see some more storminess this spring, but time is running out and I’m getting anxious to jump in the pool already!
*Statewide Sierra snow pack is at around 73% of normal for this date!

April – June Precipitation and Temperature Outlook: Warmer with an increased chance of precipitation!

The BloomSky up at Squaw Valley shows the snow melting fast now with all the rain.

Current reservoir levels look great as the snow begins to melt.

The satellite shows lots of moisture heading into the Great basin as we only get scattered showers.

The jet stream will keep pushing into SoCal as the cut off Low opens up and heads inland.

Forecast models bring back an even better chance of rain this coming Wednesday and Thursday.
