49°F Welcome spring! One more strong storm to go before spring weather returns midweek.

March 21, 2016

Hey Hey Giovanni here! Your weatherguy. Welcome spring! Welcome warm and longer days! Who's ready for planting a garden? The Vernal equinox signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere – earliest spring since 1896 – and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. It marks that special moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator going from south to north. In 2016, this equinox arrives on March 20 at 4:30UTC, or on March 19 at 11:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time. Here’s what we in the Northern Hemisphere know about this equinox. Our sunrise is earlier now, and nightfall comes later. Plants are sprouting as the longer days warm us into the 70s and 80s over the next couple of months and heat of summer arrives.

Weekly Forecast: It may the first day of spring, but it's snowing above 8000ft. Not a lot, but by Monday morning the next stronger, wetter and windier storm will start to push ashore bringing with it lower snow levels. Possibly as low as 3500ft by Monday night as the upper level Low responsible for all this wet weather passes through NorCal. This next wave will bring us up to 1" of rain or more and up to 15" of snow above 7000ft with a couple of inches at 3500ft down to the upper foothill communities of Cascade Shores and Banner Mtn. This next system may also bring some dynamic weather along the cold front so we may see a few t'storms developing over the northern Sacramento valley and even the Sierra foothills!  High pressure rebuilds on Tuesday evening clearing out the storm to the east leading to warmer spring weather through the rest of the week.

*Statewide Sierra snow pack is at around 91% of normal for this date!

El Niño update: With spring's arrival we wave farewell to El Niño conditions and weekly updates. El Niño is now fading, but a few wet and wild El Niño storms are still possible through early spring. It was a blast and confusing at times, but wow we sure did have a fun time tracking the storms.

February - April Precipitation and Temperature Outlook: WET AND MILD TO CONTINUE!

Snow levels are running above 8000ft making travel over the crest slick, but at least there are no chain controls in effect with this warmer storm.

My BloomSky this evening as rain returns to Nevada City!

Huge improvements continue overall in most areas from just last fall, but we need more snow.

One more storm on Monday before we clear and get back to spring weather!

The jet stream will retreat north on Tuesday.

Forecast models look wet today and Monday.

The precipitation outlook map for the coming week is looking wet again, but clearing out after Tuesday.
