42°F The rain finally ended! We dry out this coming week, but El Niño is far from being done with us!

January 24, 2016

We just had the wettest week this season so far. El Niño brought us a long parade of storms with over 5ft of snow along the Sierra crest. These were not the coldest of storms which is typical of El Niño, but at times it sure felt like it wouldn't stop raining. We even had a funnel cloud reported near Chico on Saturday! This again was not a typical El Niño flow as these storms were focused over NorCal and Central California, missing LA for the most part.

Weekly Forecast:
The coming week will start out dry and remain dry as High pressure takes control and will remain the dominating weather feature for much of the week. Forecast models look wet by Friday morning as a strong jet stream will slam into California, bringing another round of El Niño enhanced storms to all of California. I'll post expected rain totals and snow levels later this coming week. Enjoy the coming warmth!

*Statewide Sierra snow pack is at around 113% of normal for this date!

El Niño update:
El Niño enhanced storms have been with us all week, actually all month long. Although most of the coming week looks dry, El Niño enhanced storms are likely late in January and into February.

Climatologists say we are experiencing of one the strongest El Niños on record. During strong El Niños, the subtropical jet stream that brings wet storms to southern Mexico and Central America moves northward, creating a constant flow of storms over Southern California. Only exceptionally strong El Niños are powerful enough to shift the entire jet stream to cover Northern California, giving the southern California double its rainfall and Northern California double the Sierra snowpack if not more, Those severe El Niños last hit in 1982-83 and 1997-98. The latest update by the CPC is growing confident that the coming El Niño is looking to match or exceed the 1997-98 event.

The latest weekly El Niño indices are listed below. El Niño is HERE! Conditions are present and it will last into early spring 2016.
