NHW011: 4 Unhealthy Oils You Should Avoid

January 10, 2015

In this episode of Natural Health World we’re talking about unhealthy oil you should avoid.

Over the years we’ve been told a lot of things about fats and oils. As science gets better we keep learning more and more about which oils to eat and which ones to avoid. First we heard that certain plant based oils were good for you. Maybe so, but with processing and chemicals added, these things are really not good for you.

Here are 4 unhealthy oils and why you should avoid them, even though they’re everywhere and were once thought of as safe.

1. Canola oil.

This is a modified version of rapeseed oil. Rapeseed oil has been used for centuries in Asian and Indian cultures, but in a different form what what we see here. When rapeseed oil is exposed to high heat to process it, the heat destroys healthy omega 3s which promote heart health. The refining and bleaching process it goes through to make canola oil leaves it without the value of the natural form of the oil.

2. Cottonseed oil

Many canned and packaged foods contail cottonseed oil. If you read your labels as we encourage you to do here at Natural Health World, you will see it everywhere. However, when you think of cotton you don’t think of food. The problem is that in order to ward off pests, cotton plants are sprayed with pesticides which get into the plant and will also be found in that plant oil. We say stay away.

3. Safflower oil

This contains a high level of omega 6 fatty acid. That was once thought of as safe, but we’ve learned since that high levels of omega 6s are implicated in heart disease. We need a better balance of omega 3 fatty acids in our diet and we don’t want to overload on the omega 6s. Safflower oil is not a good choice for reducing omega 6 fatty acid.

4. Soybean oil

Soy has often be touted as a great and healthy alternative to meat. But, we have learned through research that processed forms of soy as in soybean oil are not at all good for us. They contain high amounts of estrogen-like compounds called phytoestrogens, which are suspected to interrupt normal thyroid function. Don’t take a chance on this kind of oil.

Natural Health World encourages you to stick to unprocessed natural forms of oil. Our favorite: coconut oil.

Coconut Oil is believed to stimulate your metabolism

Coconut oil is a wonderful, natural and beneficial oil that can help anyone! Think about it: it has one ingredient in the jar, unlike any moisturizer such as lotion. It can soothe dry skin. I use it on my face every day. It can soften dry hair. Use it after your shampoo-no chemicals! It can also help alleviate constipation. Take 2 tablespoons a day and it can help keep things moving along in your bowel without any medication or side effects.

Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, sort of the way butter is. You can cook with it and it contributes naturally good things to your food without artificial additives or coloring. I use it in my frying pan, like when I scramble eggs.

Some people think it can help burn fat too. It turns out to be heart friendly, unlike some processed foods that have trans fat, such as margarine. Think about the thousands of years island people all over the world have used coconut oil, and they are usually slim, healthy and beautiful. It is believed to stimulate your metabolism and that’s just one more reason to use this wonderful oil. Natural Health World recommends coconut oil as a safe moisturizer, great addition to your diet and natural way to promote colon health.
