5 Lessons Most Musicians Have To Learn The Hard Way

By Vinny Ribas   indieconnect.com

Being a big fish in a small pond doesn’t make you king of the sea. Big cities like Nashville, LA and NY are overflowing with singers, songwriters and musicians who move there thinking they will take the town by storm. They get this because they were one of the best in their small town, but now they are one of thousands of guppies in a town full of big fish!
It will always take more time and more money than you planned. This rule applies to every business start-up, and being a musician is no exception. Being a musician is both expensive and time consuming. The goal is to make or attract enough money to lighten the load.
Without a plan, there is no career.  Every serious artists needs to know exactly where they are headed, and then map out the exact steps they must take to get there in the most timely and effective manner.
You can’t do it alone. It takes an army to make one musicians successful. This includes a business team, instrument and/or vocal instructors, industry mentors, engaged fans, venue managers and many more. Build relationships so you can mobilize any part of your army when it’s their turn for action.
Not knowing the ins and outs of the business leads to costly and sometime crippling mistakes. Musicians who don’t study the industry often wind up signing bad contracts, trusting the wrong people, unnecessarily signing away their intellectual property or royalties, not collecting from all of the revenue streams they have money coming from, being charged far too much for the products and services they purchase and a whole lot more.
