The seeds for this mix were planted after shopping at a dollar sale on 12″ singles on the Ubiquity Records website and realizing just how much of the label’s output I had in my collection. Honestly, the idea probably got started with the Shawn Lee episode that I did a few years back: almost every cut featured on that show was from the Ubiquity label.

Time was overdue for me to put together a mix like this.

Greyboy would have been my introduction to Ubiquity back in 1993. Their rare groove-based label Luv N’ Haight got me familiar with Mighty Ryeders, the band responsible for “Evil

Vibrations,” which was sampled for De La Soul’s “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’.” That’s not the only great song from th e Ryeders, as “Lovely” certainly proves. Kirk

Degiorgio transforms into As One for some soulful techno on “Undefeated” and even Madlib stops by with his Yesterday’s New Quintet project. And then there’s the late, great

Darondo, whose “Didn’t I” will forever remain the quintessential soul jam.

In terms of special guests, Jneiro Jarel shows up as all of Shape Of Broad Minds on “Eyes And Ears” and Muhsinah’s vocals grace “One At A Time.” The lovely Tiombe Lockhart is featured on “Stay With Me” while Rahel’s voice skips and saunters across “Let It Out.” You can thank Carlos Niño and his musical cronies for the wonderful additions to “The Healer Don’t Break” and I believe Paul Fryer provides the vocals on Shawn Lee’s achingly gorgeous “Meadow In The Summer.”

Throw in some clever covers alongside the original works across a variety of genres and there’s a lot to get into, but it only provides a glimpse in to what Ubiquity has been up to for the past two decades. Hope they stick around for another 20 years and hope you enjoy this month’s episode of Us & Us.
