Us & Us: “deeper than that…”

A Motion Mixtape for Phuture Frequency

Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA

Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3

I wasn’t planning on making a “turning 40″ mix; it just sort of happened that way. A title from a Free The Robots cut sums up the state of mind I was in when I recorded this:

“Reflect And Reform.” Truth be told, I’m still there, but I’ll spare you the details.

Jazz has really gotten a hold of me lately, particularly the more free and spiritual strands. A majority of this mix spends its time within that vibe, pulling in electronic and ambient

pieces that travel down similar paths. The second half consists of selections that didn’t make the last episode, including tracks from P’Taah, Innerzone Orchestra, The Universal

Messengers, and Nina Simone. Georgia Anne Muldrow shows up under the pseudon ym Jyoti. Respect due to DJ Shadow, whose cut “Influx” introduced me to Bama The Village

Poet and The Black Voices back in college. And I still feel like one of the only people on earth who will go to bat for Squarepusher’s *Music Is Rotted One Note* album. Yes, it

was a departure from his manic takes on drum and bass, but I still say that his Herbie Hancock meets Karlheinz Stockhausen period produced some good music.

Last but not least, a longstanding thank you to Jason Hogans (wherever he might be in the world), because I still get the same feeling from his song “Esteem” from his Peter And

The Rooster E.P. It is every bit as challenging and euphoric as when it first dropped on the Planet E label 15 years ago.

So much more to say, but it’s always better to let the music do the talking. Hope you enjoy this one. Thanks for listening.
