Us & Us: “Self-evident…”

A Motion Mixtape for Phuture Frequency

Transmitting from Mount Vernon, New York, USA

Supplying musical therapy by way of vinyl, CD, cassette, and MP3

“To be Black and conscious in America is to be in a constant state of rage.” – James Baldwin

This mix was inspired by a number of things, but primarily the murder of Trayvon Martin, the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, and the increased need for self-love in the weeks and months that followed. Other factors include the spirit of resistance, rebellion, and reflection during Black August as well as an Afrofuturism mix that King Britt put together a few months back which has taken up permanent residence within my MP3 player. Beyond that, as a music lover and a selector, sometimes you wonder what might happen if certain cuts got together and had an exchange, which pretty much describes Us & Us as a whole.

The piece featuring Dr. John is a Charles Mingus cover from a wonderful collection entitled *Weird Nightmare: Meditations On Mingus.* It came out in 1992 and was my introduction to Mingus’s work. If there’s anything that I’m thankful for in 2013, it’s learning about the cosmic blues of my new favorite artist, Lonnie Holley. I’ve been wanting to play the Menagerie cut for a while and I had to represent for the Donky Pitch label, particularly The Range, who can do no wrong in my eyes right now.

Always a blessing to come through and play some tunes for y’all. Hope you enjoy…
