The Message of Our Generation
A few weeks back I came across a startling study conducted by the World Wildlife Foundation. This study found that we've lost 50% of the Earth's wildlife in the last 40 years.

The metric used to make the determination was the Living Planet Index (LPI) which has declined by 52% since 1970. The LPI measures more than 10,000 representative populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, according to the WWF website.

The primary cause of this mass destruction comes from us, humans. Clear cutting forests to make way for the swelling rise in population and increased consumption have brought horrifying results to oceanic life, land animals and, the hardest hit, freshwater animals.

A few of the most startling figures in this study showed:

Freshwater animals have dropped over 70% (primarily fish and frogs)
Marine species have declined 39% (biggest loss near Antarctica, also includes many sharks, turtles and seabirds)
Tropical areas reported  56% loss in species.
African Elephants have lost 60% of their natural habitat since 2002
