The Tin Man - All I Want Is A Heart

November 27, 2014

Did you know that as a diabetes sufferer you have a 65% likelihood of having cardiovascular disease? But never fear. This isn’t the be all and end all as there are plenty of ways you can become educated, helping protect yourself from the greater risk of cardiovascular diseases.

This week join Amy Monarch and Teresa Leberknight of The Monarch and Dr T as they help to empower you in decreasing your risk of cardiovascular disease, providing you with all the information you need to help improve your health.

Listen as they guide you through the different cardiovascular complications that can arise in diabetes sufferers and advice on how to manage it.

Sugar is Like Glass

Cardiovascular diseases relate to anything to do with your heart, and can often be a complication of diabetes. Not taking good care of the old heart muscle can lead to further issues such as stroke, heart attack, angina and high blood pressure.

For many of your organs sugar in your blood can act like glass, constantly irritating your tissue. This causes an inflammatory immune response which causes your body to harden the arteries with scar tissue upon scar tissue.

A recent study in the UK concluded that diabetes sufferers who managed to adequately control their blood glucose levels reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 57 percent, which I think you’ll agree is a pretty significant number.

Be Mindful

Despite some of the daunting statistics you can change the process, significantly reducing your risk of cardiovascular issues. It is better to face the issue head on, don’t stick your head in the sand. Be mindful to how capable you are to make significant differences to your health and your future.

It is important to consider your quality of life. There is a big difference between the last 20 years of your life being a haze of medication, pain, stress and hospital bills; or those years being full of happiness, being able to spend plenty of time with your loved ones and feeling pretty great.

Listen this week as Amy and Teresa answer questions such as:

What are cardiovascular diseases?
What are the main issues with high blood pressure?
What medications are available for cardiovascular issues?
How do you correct these problems?
Are the ways to reverse the damage?
How much exercise should I do?
How do I start?

It’s all about minimising the cardiovascular impact and ensuring you give yourself the best quality of life possible.

We want you to share your experiences with The Monarch and Dr T community. How did you get started, and what particular tips and advice would you have for others just starting out?

Start the conversation on Facebook or the community page of the website and help each other reach their goals. Alternatively, leave any comments or questions below as we would love to hear from you!
