Oh Sugar! Do I Have to Give it Up?

October 09, 2014

It’s all about sugar, sugar, sugar this week and answering that age old question: do I really have to give it up?

Do you feel addicted to the sweet stuff? Does it make you feel anxious even thinking about going cold turkey?

This week join Amy Monarch and Teresa Leberknight of The Monarch and Dr T as they guide you on how to ease yourself away from your sugar dependency.

This episode helps you understand the effects sugar has on your body, and especially on your diabetes symptoms. You will come away with some useful tips and tricks on how to be clever with your sugar consumption.

Oh Sugar, Oh Honey

Sugar is addictive. This is scientific fact, as it has the same structure on a molecular level to that of heroine. Meaning sugar affects our brains in the same way.

The receptors in our brain are like puzzle pieces, and sugar fits these receptors perfectly. This adds to the sugar addiction by lighting up our happiness receptors like a Christmas tree.

Sugar jump-starts your happy space. However, it actually decreases the sensitivity of your taste buds, meaning nothing else will taste as good as sugar.

Sugar and Your Diabetes

The two are inexplicably linked, so it’s super important that you control your sugar intake.

Sugar creates an insulin spike, and the inevitable crash that follows. This sugar overload causes inflammation and an increase in all your diabetes symptoms; some you are familiar with and others you aren’t.

It’s time to listen to how your body is communicating with you, especially when you’re eating too much sugar. Learning to be smart with your sugar intake can significantly reduce, and even eradicate your diabetes symptoms.

This week, Amy and Teresa answer questions some important questions like:

  • Why is sugar so addictive?
  • What effects does sugar actually have on our  bodies?
  • What symptoms should I be looking out for? What are the different sources of sugar?
  • How do I let go of sugar?
  • How do I overcome the cravings?
  • How long does it take to overcome a sugar addiction?

Through simply decreasing your sugar intake you can take control of your diabetes and start listening to your body, and kick your sugar addiction for good.
