Diabetes 2.0 - Let's Knock it Out!

October 09, 2014

Do you suffer from diabetes? Or know someone who does? If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes, it doesn't mean that the world as you know it is over. It just means that you have to change certain aspects of how you live.

Not sure what changes to make? Join hosts Amy Monarch and Teresa Leberknight of The Monarch and Dr. T as they discuss concerns about diabetes and how to manage the disease. Kicking off the new series, which will include a new episode every week, the hosts provide a little background info on themselves and diabetes and talk about the steps to leading a happy, healthy lifestyle.

By taking a few minutes out of your day to listen, you will learn about the different types of diabetes, the symptoms to watch out for, changing behavioral patterns, and how to manage the disease.

What is This Scary Thing Called Diabetes?

Everyone hears about it, and a large population suffers from it – 25.8 million Americans to be exact. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that occurs when the body isn't able to produce any or enough insulin, which causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. Diabetes can come on early in your life, or even in adulthood. There is no real cause behind it, and currently, there is no cure.

Amy and Teresa want to educate people on the causes and risks of diabetes and provide information so you can prevent, reduce or learn to live happily with diabetes. As a certified health coach, Amy knows that if you make small changes, they lead to big changes. Teresa, a natural pharmacist, has a husband and mother-in-law who suffer from Type 2 Diabetes and she wants to help people make the necessary changes to reduce the risks.

Understanding and Controlling Diabetes

Depending on the type of diabetes you have, there are ways in which you can control it. For instance, changing your routines or dietary habits is a huge help. People who need to take medication in order to keep their diabetes under control can eventually come off their medication, and feel a sense of freedom, if they just treat their body the right way. This means eating healthier, cutting out calories, or even taking daily walks.

Amy and Teresa discuss some of the most common concerns about diabetes and answer some important questions, including:

  • What are the warning signs and symptoms of diabetes?
  • How can you change your lifestyle to live a healthier life?
  • What does eating healthy mean exactly?
  •  How do you get people with diabetes to listen?
  • What can you do to make changes now?

There are many ways we can knock out diabetes, and learning about the causes/effects and different types is a good starting point. Even with a hectic lifestyle, there are things you can do to change your habits. Monarch and Dr. T provide tips, suggestions and important resources and information to help you get started.
