Ep 5: Todd Pritchard- Modern Fingerstyle Guitar Podcast

November 28, 2014

This is a different type of podcast than you are used to on MFG.

In this episode I sat down with Todd Pritchard, a really talented guitarist from Philadelphia, for a hybrid interview/lesson.

I found Todd on accident while browsing YouTube. I watched a couple of his videos including his rendition of John Mayer’s Neon and one of his original compositions called Andy Mckee, Don Ross and Tommy Emmanuel Tribute  and I was compelled to reach out.

Todd agreed to do a lesson – one that I could share with all the Modern Fingerstyle Guitar Podcast fans out there – so here it is!

Todd’s playing has groove written all over it. He takes hip-hop, soul, and jazz to take his electric and acoustic fingerstyle playing to interesting and unique places. You can learn more about Todd and his music on his YouTube Channel and find him on Instagram at @ToddPritch.

Todd specializes in diving into songs with his students that uses a mixture of theory and feel. You can learn more about his lessons on his websites here.

Below is the video accompaniment for the podcast so you can see what Todd is playing on the guitar.

Highlights from the Podcast:

  • Todd’s background and player story
  • “It’s easy to learn fingerstyle songs from the greats like Tommy Emmanuel and Andy Mckee without understanding what’s going on musically/theoretically.†“Getting lost in tracks and using theory to get back into it.
  • Nashville Number System for improvisation and composition.
  • For composing, learn your chord extensions. Trying to play a melody under a chord. Learn them by ear.
  • Learning melodies over the scales – finding intervals that bring out the chord.
  • Process of transcribing “Neonâ€
  • Perfecting Songs
  • Is it best to learn songs by ear or by tab?
